What do you know– Wikipedia has a list of book listshttp://j.mp/Hnah1u E.g., 100 most influential books ever written- Maria Popova
ReplyDeleteI think this one suits the idea of language and power. Books are written in a specific language and they change people’s life forever. This one shows that the language that is used in the books influenced people. The list shows influential and famous books. I think it is very meaningful. Language is a power and gives opportunity to the author to change people’s life and life’s situation. People read books for different reasons, and they often look for the advices in the book. If the book is influential, as the books written on the list it shows that language is such a powerful tool that can change our life.
Open journalism: How to get involved - Friday 30 March- Media Guardian
This one shows that there is opportunity given to everyone to try them in writing. I think it is very important. Journalists have a lot of power to tell us what we should think. Journalists give us a message or inform us about event that is happening, but they somehow manipulate what we should think. The opportunity given by Media Guardian shows that everyone can become a journalist, and as we all know journalists often influence our opinion and minds.
YES. "It’s never too late to give up what you are doing, and start doing what you realise you love- Explore
This one is powerful for me because it shows that a quote can give people some idea what to do with their lives. Sometimes quotes are more powerful than any advice we give someone. Quotes are powerful since they are words said by influential people. We want those quotes to mean something to us. We look for the meaning and we want those quotes to be part of our life. This quote will influence many people and many people will make changes. Language is always more powerful when is used by famous people. Famous people always influence our lives and make us think differently.
Media has power of choosing what we read and to certain extend how we are going to interpret it. They can manipulate emotions and decide how reader is going to respond. The tweet that I chose is “Japan Admits Nuclear Plant Still Poses Dangers” it is a really short and brief a piece of information, that is supposed to make the reader afraid since all of us are aware of what Nuclear Power Plants are capable of especially if we look back at the relatively recent Chernobyl disaster. The short piece of information does not specify how endangered we are so therefore due to the lack of information many people can panic, not being fully aware of the situation.
ReplyDeleteThe next twit that I’ve decided to choose is an advertisement. PBS posted “Do you know about Google+ page?” this is significant in terms of language and power since we can observe how important the idea of promoting something or advertising is. Since our attention is drawn to this, it is more likely we are going to use it; therefore someone else is going to make money out of that. This shows the idea of language and power in terms of manipulating the consumer. This idea of quick access to information also affects the amount of spam we get every single day.
The last twit I chose talks about the weather changes, due to the global warming “Arctic Sea Ice Eyed for Clues to Weather Extremes” posted by The New York Times. There are certain topics that are “fashionable” like being “green” is in fashion right now. Media never slips an opportunity to follow something that is fashionable like for example the theme of the global warming. Of course the fact we draw our attention to this issue is good, but there are many more environmental problems that need our attention but since media are not interested in them, we don’t know as much about them. This leads me to a question, is it us who create the fashion, or do we just accept what is given by the media?
